Broken off capacitor under CPU causing e-73? Empty

Well, after going over and over this board, finally found a missing cap under the cpu. The box was x-clamped by someone else, I figure they obliterated one of the capacitors when they removed the foxconn clamp. Now what?

What am I gonna solder a new one on there with? Its the size of this damn . (dot)

has anyone had any luck at all soldering these?

A lil' bit.
Tweezers and a thin soldering iron tip.
Or, lay the motherboard upside down flat, place it on the pads really carefully and reflow the solder.
This way, allthe caps will get reflown but the one that's come off should get soldered on.

Not having luck w/ tweezers, and i did try to reflow it on but it ends up blowing away. If I decrease the airflow, then it doesn't get hot enough. Damn 968 is so imprecise. I even tried tacky flux to try and hold it, same story... wish I had solder paste, but then again i would end up bridging a whole bunch of them at once knowing my luck. I am not sure if the pads are intact on the mobo, real hard to see. gonna try tomorrow again

Yeah, I did wonder if the airflow would blow it.
I guess, using the same method, put it in the oven which has less airflow.
Otherwise holding it down with heat resistant tape?

well, i did have a thought last night - gluing it - with aluminum filler based epoxy. It is conductive with almost no resistance, its the crap used for repairing threads in aluminum cylinder heads so its also heat resistant. gonna try a simple circuit first, say a battery, lightbulb and switch, then measure just to make sure it does conduct well...lol

I bet that will work. But... I bet the cap is not what is causing the E73. I'm interested to see if replacing the cap will fix the problem.

I guess we'll never know, b/c I spoke to the customer, and he just wanted his xbox back. I said what I found and that if I fix it, it would cost so and so, and I recommended mobo replacement as a safer bet..... didn't go for it so its back at the store.

Did fix an e-65 yesterday by reflowing the hana out of all things.... weird

Oh bummer, I wanted to know.

About the E65... Nothing ever surprises me about these things anymore lol.

Well, if the store buys it back from the dude or gives him a trade-in discount, I might get it back, and soon as I do.... I will take some pics. One thing that worries me though, is since this was mechanical damage, is there any real pad left to resolder or glue it back on.

Curious what the value on those caps is... if it was a resistor, I would try to fool it with conductive ink (defroster repair) but caps... different story.
