| Hmm, I did exactly that and the code won't load into the software. Yes, it is recognizing the chip though. | |

| Is it a .hex file your trying to open? Are you on the correct COM port? Did you select the chip first? (12F683) It's in the lower right hand corner. Make sure the chip is in pin 13 on the ZIF socket. (pin 1 being at the handle/lever thing)
SR2K, PM your email and I'll send you this other program, looks exactly the same but it might work.

| Yea, I did all that. The thing just won't import the code. I don't think I'm getting the right file though, because I have to save it as a .hex to make it a .hex, it wasn't when I downloaded it. And I wouldn't need the chip to actually import the code right?
EDIT: Collins and I figured it out. I didn't get the hex code in the email for whatever reason. Collins had the same thing happen, but he got it on his phone and forwarded it to me so now we're all good. The backwards chip didn't fry, thankfully.
EDIT: How could you use a button instead of the sync? You could just connect the sync wire to a button, right?

I think if you connect the wire that would normally go to the sync button to another button and hook the other terminal of that button to ground it should work. I'm assuming the sync button grounds pin whatever it was from the PIC chip. - CollinstheClown

| Someone asked me the other day, why not use a simple LM555 and some caps/resistors to achieve a rapid fire. I told them I didn't really know the answer, but I thought it was probably because of the patches and you needed pauses in the fire rate instead of just a steady fire rate to get past it. Does anyone know the answer to that question?

| Well aside from the fact that the 555 method takes up a ton of space, and is more complicated to put together, I'd say because you have to install extra buttons and pretty much remove rumber support. Which to me isn't that big of a deal, just I like the wieght of the controller and removing the motors throws me off a bit.
I mean the 555 version I have (from way back) consists of the following: -555 Timer -5 resistors (different vaues) -2 transistors (different values I think) -2 Diodes -2 different typed of caps -2 seperate circuits on 2 boards -alot of wires -variable resistor (to change speed) -2 buttons
The .hex version consists of -12F683 PIC Microcontroller -couple resistors and maybe a diode (depending on the controller)
The microcontroller wins all over this in my opinion.

| Thanks Mike, that totally makes sense!
On another note, does anyone know the thresholds of the patches, acceptable fire rates, etc...

| I'm trying to figure out how to convert the hex. If I can do that, say goodbye to 25$ updates. I just got all my stuff in today. I'll tell you what, digi-key doesn't exactly save on shipping. | |

What do you think about the all zeros in the code I read off my chips I have now from a different vendor? You think they are encrypted?
Steve they are not encrypted mate, they are protected what happens is with pic chips u can set the fuses(inside the chip) to stop read/write to the chip. so what the person has done is programmed the chip with the read fuse blown so then noone can read the code back. the write fuse will be ok has u can reprogram the chip with new code but even with the new code on u wont beable to read back if the read fuse is set to off there was a way with older pic chips to read protected code back but it was risky (could render the chip unusable) but that method got combatted with newer chips.

| Can someone do me a favor and just send me a programmed chip up? I have a guy breathing down my neck who wants a mod and I dont own a working programmer and the school one is confusing. (Working on learning it so i can teach the teacher. | |
