PostSubject: Re: WANTED: - Supplies for Aftercooler.   Mon Jan 04, 2010 12:51 am

I just sent the board layout to SR2K, but someone should check it because I've never actually made it and it could possibly be wrong. I've used the same schematic on a protoboard with different relays so I think it should be fine, but someone should look over it.
And also, what happens if the fans are connected to 5V while the console is on? Because if you turn the console back on before this circuit times out then the fans will still be connected to 5V.

gotem, The only thing that worries me is how thin the traces are they could be susceptible to burning out.

I can send you another with thicker traces in a few minutes
Edit: Isn't it only the OUT lines that will carry any significant current? So could you run over those with a sharpie and make them thicker?

IDK, I generally make voltage transformers so those traces just look tiny to me.

I'm pretty sure 1/16" to 1/32" is fine for signal traces, but still make those OUT lines bigger if you think of it.

How difficult would you say making your own PCB is?
Looks interesting, and I know my dad's done it 'back in the day'.

Well I probably shouldn't say because I can't actually do it yet, but it seems like one of those things that is really easy once you get it. I still haven't "gotten it"...

PostSubject: Re: WANTED: - Supplies for Aftercooler.   Mon Jan 04, 2010 3:36 am

I think I've figured out the toner transfer process, so the design is on the board, but I guess I'm not patient enough or it's too cold so the bare copper doesn't get fully etched away. This shorts the entire board together, which is usually not good...

In concept its easy, but if you do it wrong, the acid bath will eat though its tank and then you have a big problem, AKA very strong acid all over the F wing of the school.

So, I assume the acid makes the copper non-conductive.
I think if I were to make my own for various projects, I woudn't be able to put the design on.

Hmm... you obviously do it differently than me. What etchant do you use?

Well if it's simple enough you can draw it with a sharpie Smile I think you can buy full PCB making kits for $50-$100

So, does just covering the copper plate where you want the traces to be make it so the acid doesn't corrode it?

As long as it's covered with an etch-resistant material (like black sharpie or laser toner). I'll just let SR2K explain it though because I can't actually do it Rolling Eyes

IDK, its a hot, bubbling vat of acid which burns like hell when you get it on your skin.

You can transfer the toner to the pcb if you have those things but you still need to etch it in the acid.

You transfer the design, either by ironing it on from photo paper printed in a laser printer or by drawing it with sharpie, then you drop the board in ferric chloride (room temp) and shake it every now and then for 20-30 minutes until all the unwanted copper is gone. Nowhere near as effective as the professional method, but it's cheap (like $20 for supplies) and less dangerous. However, it apparently doesn't work very reliably...

And btw, I finally finished setting up the circuit on a protoboard, it will be less than 2" by 2" once I trim down the board. I've got it set up with a 5V regulator pretending to be the xbox and a PC fan as the 360 fans and it seems to work perfectly! Very Happy

Put a fish tank heater in the acid, it speed up the reactions and makes it dissolve faster.

How hot is good? From a quick search I found some that heat to 78 F and some up to 93 F. I would assume hotter is better right?
And won't the acid mess it up, or no?

The warmer the faster.

Acid can't eat though glass so just make sure you get a heater with a glass covering. Also a Fishtank bubbler helps heep the mixture nice and even.
